Driving exceeding the speed limit, failing to use seat belts, and exiting intersections suddenly are the three main causes of fatal accidents that have been identified in the country. For the past five years, accidents statistics from the National Road Safety Council, MKKJR showed a flat trend. However, as of June 2025, the number of fatal accidents recorded an increase.
As of June this year, 12 deaths from road accidents were recorded compared to 7 deaths in the same period last year. Road users are advised to be more cautions when on the road, and practise prudent driving apart from adhering to the road regulations.
2024 recorded 1,163 cases of road accidents. From the figure, 359 injuries and 13 deaths were recorded.
Data also showed that self-accidents accounted for more than 50 per cent of accident cases, followed by car collision at 30 per cent, and hit and run at 10 per cent.
For traffic offences, 24,200 compounds were issued in 2020. From 2021 to 2024, the total number of offences was in the range of 14,560 to 18,288 cases per year.
For the past three years, 2,475 offences involving commercial vehicles were recorded. Among the major offences include carrying load exceeding the weight limit, and driving vehicles that are deemed not safe.
The MKKJR is actively implementing initiatives to increase road safety such as the new strategic plan, road auditing, speed monitoring device, and launching the National Road Safety Campaign titled Watch Your Speed, Watch the Road'.
